Tarragona is the main town of the south of Catalonia (Spain). It has a population of about 140,000 inhabitants. It's placed 100 km south of Barcelona, on the Mediterranean coast. From Barcelona you can come by train or bus and the trip takes approximately one hour.
Archaeological remains of the Roman era of incalculable value are preserved in the town. The archaeological ensemble of Tárraco (Tarragona's original name) was declared "World Heritage" by UNESCO in 2000.
Tarragona is part of the Costa Dorada, which has beaches in 20 villages in the south of Catalonia such as Cambrils, Salou, Vilaseca, Altafulla, Torredembarra, etc. visited by thousands of tourists every year. It has a temperate and mild climate with an average temperature of 18° C (25° C in summer and 12°C in winter).
In Tarragona theres is an important offer of leisure and gastronomy, too. In Vilaseca (7 km from Tarragona) you find Port Aventura, the biggest theme park in Spain.
Living in Tarragona
Living in Tarragona as a student of the URV costs about 450-700 euros per month, depending on accommodation and lifestyle chosen. It should be taken into consideration that the duration of MASTERDEC is around 10 months.
- Share a flat: It costs between 100 and 300 euros per month. In some cases the expenses are included (if they are not included at least 40 euros for light, water, gas, internet must be added). The prices can change depending on location, room size, level of independence, etc.
- Rent a flat: It can cost between 400 and 600 euros per month for a just one person in a central location. If the person is not a resident of the European Union, this option is more complicated because lessors usually require bank accounts from the EU.
- Rent a room in the Sant Jordi University Halls of Residence (of the URV): Prices varies between 595 euros per person (double room with bathroom outside) and 705 euros per person (single room with private bathroom). These prices include: accommodation, consumptions, full board from Sunday (dinner) to Friday (lunch) not including holidays, weekly cleaning of the room, fixed telephone fee, Wi-Fi internet connection and use of common areas. This residence is very well located, just 500 metres from the URV.
- Rent an URV room: It costs between 440 euros per month (single room) and 350 euros per month per person (double room). These prices include Wi-Fi internet connection, but they do not include light and water spending (about 60 euros more per month approximately). It is a set of rooms (21 double and 36 single rooms) fully equipped (except sheets and towels). The advantage of these rooms is that it is not necessary to belong to the EU or to have a bank account in Spain. A deposit must be paid for one or two months depending on the accommodation time signed in the rental contract. They can be rented for at least one month or also for the whole academic course (9,5 months).

For basic shopping such as food, cleaning, etc. there is a wide range of supermarkets. A person can spend between 80 and 120 euros per month.
If you do not want to cook, the URV has a restaurant where menu for lunch costs 8 euros approximately. If you want to eat something cheaper, in the center of Tarragona there are many cafés that offer sandwiches between 2 and 5 euros. Kebab are another economic alternative (Arabic-Lebanese food) which cost about 5 euros with drink included. In all restaurants, they offer full menus at lunchtime that cost between 8 and 12 euros.
